ULEZ compliant car models

No car model is ULEZ compliant as a whole. What counts is the fuel and the year the car was first registered, so the same model can pass or pay.

An estimate from the plate's age, never sent anywhere. TfL's vehicle checker has the official record.

Why the year matters more than the badge

Manufacturers moved to cleaner engines at different times, but the law set a last date for every new car. Petrol cars sold new from January 2006 had to meet Euro 4. Diesel cars sold new from September 2015 had to meet Euro 6.

So a 2016 diesel Golf passes, while a 2014 one usually doesn't, even though they look the same. Many petrol cars from 2001 to 2005 pass too, and so do some diesels from late 2014. TfL sets out these dates.

Audi A3 and A4

Audi sold both with petrol and diesel engines, so the fuel on your logbook decides which date counts.

BMW 1 Series and X5

The X5 is a big 4x4. For Euro 4, cars over 2,500 kg maximum mass followed the later van dates, so check a petrol X5 from 2006 or 2007 by its plate.

Dacia Duster

Dacia began selling the Duster in the UK in 2013, so a petrol one passes. A diesel one needs a first registration from September 2015.

Fiat 500 and Mini Cooper

The current Fiat 500 went on sale in 2007, so nearly every petrol one passes. The electric 500 and the electric Mini meet the rules at any age.

Ford Fiesta, Focus, Kuga and Transit

The Fiesta, Focus and Kuga follow the car dates. The Transit is a van, so a diesel Transit follows the van date instead.

Hyundai i10 and Kia Sportage

Jaguar XF and Mercedes E-Class

Both are large saloons and estates. The XF arrived in 2008, so every petrol XF should meet Euro 4. For a diesel of either, look for September 2015 or later.

Land Rover Defender and Discovery, Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover Sport

The original Defender was built until early 2016, so a diesel one made before September 2015 usually pays. Heavy 4x4s followed the later van dates for Euro 4, so check an older petrol model by its plate. The Evoque went on sale in 2011, and a petrol one passes.

Nissan Juke, Micra and Qashqai

The Juke arrived in 2010 and the Qashqai in 2007, so petrol ones pass. An older Micra from before 2006 may still pass, as many petrol cars from 2001 do.

Common questions

How do I check my exact car?

Put its registration into TfL’s vehicle checker. It reads the official record, so it knows the Euro standard even where the year leaves it open.

Is a model listed as ULEZ compliant in an advert proof?

No. An advert can be wrong about the engine or the year. Check the registration with TfL before you pay for the car.
