Dundee LEZ
The Dundee LEZ covers the city centre inside the inner ring road. Enforcement began on 30 May 2024, and the zone runs 24 hours a day, every day. If your car doesn't meet the rules, driving into the zone brings a £60 penalty, and the penalty doubles if you drive in again within 90 days.
Dundee LEZ
Most cars meet the rules if first registered from2006 (petrol) or Sept 2015 (diesel)Plenty of petrol cars built between 2001 and 2005 also meet the rules. Type your car's number plate, or the year it was first registered, to get your own answer. Any that don't meet the rules are charged a £60 first penalty.
Scotland's official vehicle checker reads the record held for your vehicle and gives the final answer.

Which vehicles are allowed in
For petrol, the requirement is Euro 4. For diesel, it's Euro 6. Euro standards are exhaust cleanliness levels set for new vehicles, and each one started applying to new cars on a fixed date. Motorbikes are exempt, according to Dundee City Council.
Petrol cars registered from 2006 onwards mostly meet the rules, and plenty of 2001 models do as well. For diesel, cars registered in September 2015 or after satisfy Euro 6 in most cases. A hybrid is judged by its engine, so a petrol hybrid qualifies the same way a petrol car does. Electric cars always qualify.

Scotland's penalties, step by step
The first penalty is £60. Each time the same vehicle enters the same zone within 90 days, the next one doubles. It stops rising at £480 for a car or light van, and at £960 for a bus, coach or lorry. After 90 days without a penalty it goes back to £60.
| Penalty | Amount | Paid within 14 days |
|---|---|---|
| 1st penalty | £60 | £30 |
| 2nd penalty | £120 | £60 |
| 3rd penalty | £240 | £120 |
| 4th penalty | £480 | £240 |

Results by year of registration
These results go by the date your vehicle was first registered, so treat them as a rough guide. The official checker gives the final answer. A changeover year means a new standard was arriving, so some cars from that year qualify and others don't. The results below assume a March registration in each year listed.
| Year of registration | Petrol | Diesel |
|---|---|---|
| 2000 | Fails in most cases | Fails in most cases |
| 2001 to 2005 | Changeover year: a mixed picture | Fails in most cases |
| 2006 to 2014 | Passes in most cases | Fails in most cases |
| 2015 | Passes in most cases | Changeover year: a mixed picture |
| 2016 and 2017 | Passes in most cases | Passes in most cases |
So a diesel first registered in March 2014, say, is older than most Euro 6 diesels and would usually pick up a £60 penalty in Dundee.
The official mygov.scot checker looks up your vehicle's record, so its answer is final. On newer vehicles, the Euro standard might also appear in section D.2 of the V5C, the logbook, as TfL explains.
Is there a charge to drive in?
No. Zones in Scotland have no daily charge and no option to pay your way in. If your vehicle fails the rules, the only money involved is the penalty.
Penalties for non-compliant vehicles
The starting penalty is £60, reduced to £30 if paid within 14 days. Every further entry into the same zone by the same vehicle inside a 90-day window doubles the next penalty. Cars and light vans stop at £480, while buses and lorries stop at £960, per mygov.scot.
If several penalties land within a single 90-day window, the money you'd owe builds up like this.
| Penalty count | Car total | Car total with early payment | Total for a bus or lorry |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | £60 | £30 | £60 |
| 2nd | £180 | £90 | £180 |
| 3rd | £420 | £210 | £420 |
| 4th | £900 | £450 | £900 |
| 5th | £1,380 | £690 | £1,860 |
| 6th | £1,860 | £930 | £2,820 |
Questions people often ask
Are the other Scottish Low Emission Zones open to my car?
Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen match Dundee's rules: Euro 4 for petrol, Euro 6 for diesel. Their first penalty is also £60, and paying to enter isn't an option. Glasgow's zone opened on 1 June 2023, while Edinburgh's and Aberdeen's both launched a year later, on 1 June 2024.
What can the number plate tell me about my car's age?
From September 2001 onwards, the two digits following the first two letters give the age. A March plate takes the year itself, so 26 points to March 2026. For September, 50 gets added, which makes 76 stand for September 2026.
Would charges apply in England as well?
That depends on which zone. A diesel first registered in March 2014 would face daily charges of £12.50 in London's ULEZ, £8 in Birmingham's zone and £9 in Bristol's. Oxford's small zero emission zone would charge £10 a day between 7am and 7pm. Bath, Bradford, Sheffield, Portsmouth, and Newcastle and Gateshead don't charge private cars at all.
