ULEZ cameras
As vehicles pass, ULEZ cameras read their number plates and match them against vehicle records. On 24 February 2022, 1,426 cameras were working, and the 2023 expansion brought in more.
How do ULEZ cameras work?
Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) is what the cameras use. Each plate is photographed and read, then TfL compares it with the DVLA record. This shows whether the vehicle meets the standard and whether that day has been paid for. Passing a camera doesn't cost you anything: the charge applies when you drive in the zone that day.

ULEZ cameras in numbers
- 1,426cameras that were operating as of 24 February 2022
- 24 hoursplates are read by the cameras night and day

These figures come from the Mayor of London.
Does a ULEZ camera map exist?
No map is published by TfL, and the cameras cover all of London, so no route inside the zone can avoid them.
